Nehru Trophy Boat Race is organized every year on the second Saturday of August. The venue of the boat race is the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala. Nehru Trophy Boat Race of Kerala is famous, not only in India, rather, throughout the world. The first boat race on the Punnamada Lake was held in the year 1952, in honor of the visit of late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, to Alappuzha. Nehruji, himself, awarded the trophy to the winners of that race and that time onwards, the trophy has been named as the "Nehru Trophy". The trophy is designed in the form of a snake-boat in silver and is placed on wooden abacus. It is also inscribed with the words of Pandit Nehru, "To the winner of the boat-race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore-Cochin", above his signature. One of the most colorful boat races in Kerala, Nehru Trophy Boat Race seeks to promote sportsman sprit as well as unity and fraternity among people.
